Thomas Tuchel Wants Bellingham's Passion So Long As England's Ace Leaves His Ego Outside.
One snub proved sufficient. A second one and it would have started to look vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, who is extremely shrewd not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy will likely need help from Jude Bellingham, even if it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to fit into the tactical structures and squad hierarchies necessary with England now that he is back in the manager's warm embrace.
Tuchel wants Bellingham's edge, his intensity, but it is a matter of using it constructively. Personal talent matters but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is a cost when stardom dominates. Still, a message has been sent.
Bellingham was given food for thought after being left out of last month’s squad. He watched England qualify at next summer’s World Cup without him. He watched Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a counterpressing No 10. He listened as the coach mention valuing the squad's spirit and ethics. Naturally, Bellingham has responded in winning fashion, netting important strikes for Real Madrid versus Barcelona and Juventus. He had to be picked; another omission would have put his tournament chances precarious.
The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham directed towards pressuring the opposition instead of teammates. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is no value to picking a fight with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period on the sidelines has shown him that playing for one's country is a valuable, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now provide cover around the 22-year-old after proving that he is unafraid to drop big names.
“No issue exists with him, and no concern with the character,” the German stated. “Bellingham possesses a competitive streak. You need a certain edge to achieve greatness that he has. Everyone need to help him and create an environment where he can channel this edge towards opponents and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”
The star took up most of the attention at the manager's selection reveal for this month’s meaningless matches against Serbia and the other. Who else? Indeed, what about Phil Foden? This is another prodigious playmaker requiring support and direction. Foden has not played for England since March and has struggled to reach his best recently but Tuchel could not ignore the player after how he played in the Champions League match versus the German side this week.
The issue, though, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eze have earned their places and there will be a strong case to select Cole Palmer once he recovers from a fitness issue. Is selecting five No 10s to the World Cup be excessive? The previous manager failed to discover the right blend at Euro 2024. He made concessions by forcing both stars into the team, restricting Harry Kane’s style in the process.
It is hard to see Tuchel making the same mistake if it disrupts the attacking balance. Space exists for a single playmaker, with speedy wingers on the wings. Clarity is beneficial. He is selected as a No 10. The new call-up, called up for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the recalled Adam Wharton will vie with Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be through the middle. Tuchel wants him near the striker. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, can you play left wing? Can you play right wing?” he stated. “He will play in the No 9-10ish position, in the middle of the pitch. I have this fantasy regarding him for a long time. I think it matches his abilities the most.”
He agreed there are times when the player has seemed out of sorts in an England shirt. “One senses almost like, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy for the game, then clearly something is not right, whether it's the position, the environment, it's unclear.
“In my opinion he is additionally so used to playing for Man City in a certain structure, with a defined role. Believe he profits a lot from clarity. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? What are my to defend?
Tuchel mentioned Bellingham making runs for tap-ins and Foden netting strikes from 18 yards. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his excellent performances for Manchester City at left-back. Interest is high.
Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for the captain in the selection. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying Foden as a deep-lying striker against Serbia or the other. Other options, the United forward, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives should Kane be absent. With qualification secured, this is a moment for testing tactics.
Meanwhile, it is also a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with his teammate going. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter setting up the captain to net in an international match versus Scotland in September 2023 to find the sole instance in 35 games for the national team when the pair combined for a goal. Tuchel will know that the two stars only exchanged the ball a single time during the team's ties with one opponent and Slovenia at the European Championship. Their partnership is lacking.
“This is where eventually it becomes the duty of the players,” Tuchel said. He does not shy away to speak frankly. Remains a sense of Bellingham being on trial. He may not be guaranteed to begin versus Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires him committed but he will be monitoring him carefully. Leave the ego at the door. It will make a powerful squad into an more effective one.
