The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Total Trust' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven games for the Spanish giants, including five starts.

Whenever a teenage makes club history in a key European match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.

He signed for Real from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and determination he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and gave him playing time in the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," stated the player after his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

The teenager has taken it with performances that have defied his age and experience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can see what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His standout trait is his personality," continued he. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are surprised to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, moving through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the option to play for either country at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a official full international.

He has featured for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my final decision so far. Things are great with Spain, but I'll make a decision soon."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz decided to play for Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club chase future success.

Following his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he said after the success at Manchester.
