The Gunners' Debated Sponsorship Deal with Visit Rwanda Is Ending In the Upcoming Season

Arsenal Football Club has declared that its disputed sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will come to an end in June of next year.

Background and Scrutiny

The arrangement, reportedly valued at around £10m per year, was initiated six years ago and has since faced significant scrutiny.

The backlash arises from the country's reported backing for the M23 forces in ongoing conflicts in the eastern areas of the adjacent DRC.

In February, Arsenal was accused of committing a disrespectful act to the government of the DRC by failing to convene with Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner to discuss the partnership.

Deal Composition and Aims

Visit Rwanda operates as a division of the the country's development agency, which is a public entity.

It is widely believed that Arsenal signed and continued this partnership primarily to expand their following across the continent.

However, the partnership has now terminated after both parties “jointly decided” to go their separate ways.

“Jointly, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have outperformed the initial objectives of the partnership – supporting environmental protection and sustainable tourism, inspiring millions of supporters to visit the nation, and creating a lasting foundation for tourism growth,” stated an official Arsenal statement.

The statement continued that the partnership has also aided Rwanda's goal of becoming an international sporting hub in Africa and stage additional international competitions while implementing local football projects that have helped hundreds of young players and coaches enhance their abilities and promote increased engagement in sports throughout the nation.

Executive Perspective and Fan Reaction

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, portrayed the arrangement as a “significant journey” and asserted it had been “propelling” the club's goals.

Yet this view was contested by a section of Arsenal's fanbase, with the activist organization Gunners Supporting Peace demonstrating outside the club's home ground during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against the French club in the end of April.

Demonstrators showed a placard declaring “Drop Visit Rwanda” and provided wristbands to conceal the Visit Rwanda logo on kits.

Industry Perspective and Fellow Clubs

In the same month, the French champions continued their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda for several more years.

Simultaneously, the Spanish club signed a fresh deal for the equivalent timeframe that has led to the logo being carried on the La Liga side's men's and women's shirts.
