The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a military coup in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which included plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. Lula was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the trial a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
