Boxing is experiencing a real slump this year, with limited compelling matchups and far less thrilling fights than typical. The possibility of a important and captivating heavyweight clash between Parker and Fabio Wardley at the London's O₂ Arena provides some solace to the beleaguered business. “This is the biggest bout, at the moment, in the heavyweight division. These two guys have stepped up when neither fighter had to agree to this match. Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have formally instructed the champion to fight him, but the Ukrainian was hurt. Joseph insists on fighting.

“Wardley is similarly well-placed and he only had to wait for his time. He said ‘I refuse.’ He wanted to fight – and with Parker because it offers him an opportunity to jump the queue.”

Parker, aging 34 soon, said: “This is all or nothing. I am not focused on a loss. I have respect for my rival and his accomplishments and his preparation for this contest. But I am on a different level and I am planning to demonstrate it on Saturday.”

Wardley’s Outlook

Wardley will be 31 in December, and he said: “It's a huge evening for the two of us. It is undoubtedly the largest contest of my professional life and the most important fight ever. But whenever I face a tougher opponent I rise to the occasion. The upcoming fight will be no different. The divide between Parker's level and where people think I am has been a common theme during my entire career.

“He has vast experience for a long time, with a many bouts on his record. Certainly not is he an old man but he has been in the sport for a significant time and had some heavy fights. I too have faced intense battles and I understand they take a toll. He has been in a far greater number of those fights than I have.”

But the general belief is that Parker is likely to be too seasoned, and too skilful, for Wardley. He should win a grueling encounter with the belief that he is the leading contender for Usyk – the undisputed best in the division by a significant margin.
