The nation's security cabinet has given its endorsement to the establishment of nineteen additional communities in the occupied West Bank, representing a continued drive for territorial growth.

Far-right Treasury Chief Bezalel Smotrich, a settler who put forward the measure together with Defence Minister Israel Katz, declared that the approval was about thwarting the establishment of a Palestinian state.

According to global statutes, Jewish communities in the disputed territories are viewed as in violation of international law.

The move has sparked condemnation from Saudi Arabia. The United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has previously stated that Israel's "unceasing" growth of communities fuels tensions, restricts Palestinians' use of territory, and undermines the prospects of a independent Palestinian state.

Escalating Unrest and Diplomatic Fallout

Unrest in the region has escalated since the hostilities in Gaza erupted in October 2023, adding to apprehensions that the growth of communities could deepen the Israeli presence and damage the prospects for a peaceful resolution based on two states.

The two-state solution envisions the creation of a Palestinian state in the Palestinian territories, with East Jerusalem as its seat of government, largely along the borders that existed prior to the 1967 Middle East war.

Since taking office in late 2022, the incumbent Israeli government has greatly accelerated the approval of fresh communities and begun the formal recognition for unauthorised settler outposts, recognising them as "suburbs" of established settlements.

Ongoing Expansion

The latest approval pushes the total number of settlements authorized over the past three years to sixty-nine, according to Smotrich.

These approvals are announced only a few days after the United Nations stated that settlement expansion had reached its most intense pace since the year 2017.

The latest group of approvals features the revival of two settlements — Ganim and Kadim — which were dismantled nearly 20 years ago.

Earlier this year, Israel approved 22 new settlements in the territories - described as the largest expansion in many years.

Furthermore, the government sanctioned blueprints in August to build in excess of three thousand homes in the controversial E1 project between the capital and the Maale Adumim community, a plan that had been on hold for decades amid intense foreign opposition.

Regarding that plan, Smotrich stated it would "end the concept of a Palestinian state."

Population Facts and International Reactions

An estimated 700,000 settlers live in around one hundred and sixty settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as per data from the Israeli anti-settlement group Peace Now. This is land that the Palestinian people aspire to have for a prospective sovereign nation.

This ongoing construction has angered Arab states who have repeatedly said it harms chances for a peaceful two-state outcome.

It has furthermore sparked fears about the possible incorporation of the disputed territories.

Ex- American President Donald Trump had previously warned Israel about this step, stating to a publication that the country would forfeit all its support from the United States if it proceeded.

Recently, the United Kingdom - along with other nations such as Australia and Canada - acknowledged a Palestinian state, a major although largely symbolic shift in foreign policy.

The Israeli government strongly rejected the move, with PM Benjamin Netanyahu declaring that a sovereign Palestine "will not happen."
