At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Largest Police Raid on Gangs
At least 64 people lost their lives in a law enforcement action cracking down on the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's records.
Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials said. In excess of 80 individuals were detained.
Violent conflicts commenced when about 2,500 police forces entered the area on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization reacted using gunfire, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives stated.
The United Nations human rights body expressed being "horrified" by the police operation, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".
Raid Aftermath
The informal settlements adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the main base of a major illegal networks.
State officials said no less than 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Dozens of people were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
Resident Accounts
Community members have compared the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.
Roads remain closed throughout the region.
Organized Crime Spread
The criminal network has been increasing their control throughout the region, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.
Rio's police said in excess of 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the mission, together with multiple guns.

Numerous alleged criminals are believed to be members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are currently hiding in the city.
